In 1999, Modernica singlehandedly revived the lost art of high-pressure fiberglass molding popularized during the modernist design movement of the 50s. As a proponent of that era, the Los Angeles-based manufacturer has proudly produced each piece of furniture as they were once made, using the original machinery and hands-on processes to ensure authentic production quality.
In what is a first in Modernica's long history of partnerships, we have reimagined the fiberglass Case Study® Arm Shell Rocker & Side Shell with 100% full-grain aniline leather upholstery — drawing inspiration from the monochromatic elements of our signature Spalding basketball.
Originally produced in 1948, the Fiberglass Shell Chair is recognized as a true icon of design; rightfully seated within the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Built for modern spaces, our limited-edition Arm Shell Rocker and Side Shell embrace a minimalist approach, combining original components with elevated material choices. To complement the series, we have produced an oversized Midweight Terry Stadium Blanket stitched with a co-branded woven label and tonal 1x1 rib edges.
Our short film features the making of Modernica x Reigning Champ: Series 001, capturing each labourious, time-honoured step to preserve the legacy and craft of fiberglass design for future generations.
