Preserved for decades, Kyoto Black uses a proprietary dyeing technique coined "kurozome kakumei" to create a non-toxic, black oxide finish that remains colourfast, and reflects the least amount of light.

Achieving depth in colour requires repeated bottoming, where garments are dyed layer upon layer. This labor-intensive method consumes significant amounts of dye. Therefore, the more saturated the black, the more superior in quality.

Once reserved for formal attire and ceremonial kimonos known as 'kuro montsuki', deep black dyeing in Japan has long symbolized dignity and refinement. Over time, the culture and tradition has evolved, with a more universal approach that embraces contemporary silhouettes.
